Living with Type 1 Diabetes: Ally's Journey

Ally's life took an unexpected turn at the age of 12 when she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Now, 44 years later, she continues to manage her condition with the support of her Cater Plus colleagues and the Cater Plus Foundation.

One of the most crucial tools in Ally's daily life is the Libre 2 Sensor. This device plays a pivotal role in monitoring her blood sugar levels, alerting her with a sound when levels become too high or too low. At work, the Libre 2 Sensor has transformed Ally's ability to function with peace of mind. "I can now sleep confidently knowing an alarm will go off if my levels are too high or too low," Ally explains. During the day, she can easily track her glucose levels through an app, eliminating the need for frequent finger pricks.

This convenience is especially valuable in her work environment, it has not only aided Ally but also deepened the team's understanding of diabetes. "We now understand that Ally’s blood sugar levels can fluctuate throughout the day," says one colleague. The sensor has highlighted the various factors influencing glucose levels beyond just food intake—such as exercise, stress, and temperature of the kitchen.

Ally's colleagues have also adapted to support her effectively. When the sensor alarm sounds, indicating a need for attention, they step in to allow Ally the time to check her levels and take necessary actions. This collaborative effort not only supports Ally but also fosters a deeper understanding of diabetes among the Cater Plus team at Rangiura Rest Home.

The cost of managing Type 1 Diabetes can be significant. For Ally, the Cater Plus Foundation's support in funding a portion of the Libre 2 Sensor has been immensely beneficial. "Having the foundation cover a portion of the cost is a big help financially," Ally acknowledges. The sensor, which costs $223.00 per month, is essential for her daily management, and the Cater Plus Foundation's assistance eases the financial burden.

With the backing of her colleagues and the Cater Plus Foundation, Ally navigates her daily challenges with newfound confidence.
